Synopsis

A lively soccer story by the award-winning Patricia Reilly Giff

Children's Literature

Trust this prolific author to deliver just the package that young readers need to get enthused about a book. Young Jill, accustomed to success in all sports and endeavors, begins to struggle when she is introduced to soccer. Encouraged through her early stumbles by friends and teachers, Jill discovers a way to take the strengths she has built in other activities and work toward developing as a goalie. The action-filled art captures the antics of busy first graders in the familiar fields and playgrounds of the elementary set. The book is from the "Greenlight Readers" series, leveled to assist parents in matching a new reader to stories with predictable skill requirements. As a Level 2 book, this one presents early readers with punchier sentences, easy dialogue, and recognizable situations. There is a set of comprehension questions at the end of the story designed to remind young readers to think about content, plot, and characters as they enjoy the story. In addition to a fine reading lesson, kids get a strong achievement message, encouraging them to take time to realize their talents. Reviewer: Deborah Zink Brooks
