Overview

A. B. Atkinson has been one of the most influential of the newly emerged generation of economists in the theoretical and empirical analysis of public finance and public policy. This volume collects the core of his contributions to the study of inequality and mobility, wealth and redistribution, taxation, and public policy issues. All of the papers were first published in the 1970s and early 1980s. They are bound together by two unifying themes: the emphasis on distributional questions throughout the book and the demonstration of the value of economic analysis to the study of public finance and policy. These essays were chosen by the author with an international readership in mind. Even the articles which refer explicitly to policy issues and economic conditions in Britain employ methods applicable elsewhere.

A. B. Atkinson is Professor of Economics at the London School of Economics and Political Science.
