This work discusses ethical challenges and issues of social responsibility related to the information and communication technologies. It considers social responsibility at the levels of privacy, access, ownership, freedom of speech, and quality, then examines practical issues surrounding software piracy, component-based development and data protection, Internet commerce, and information warfare. Case studies are presented on consumer privacy concerns and actual e-commerce activity, and attitudes of Australian IS/IT managers to the concept of cyber vigilantism. There is a moral analysis of computer suppliers' and employers' policies for the prevention of repetitive strain injury among computer users, and discussion of e- commerce taxation.
