Reviewer:Rebecca M Shepherd, MD(Washington University School of Medicine)
Description:This is a thorough review of soft tissue rheumatology from the aspect of basic physiology and pathology to patient presentation and treatment in the clinic setting.
Purpose:The purpose is to provide a scientific and evidence-based approach to the subject of soft tissue rheumatology which has traditionally underrepresented in the literature. The book gives a comprehensive overview of the different types of soft tissue disorders and provides a multidisciplinary approach to diagnosis and treatment. Soft tissue disorders are notoriously hard to manage in the clinic and the book outlines a structured approach.
Audience:The audience is primary care physicians, fellows, physical therapists. The authors appear to be credible authorities in the area.
Features:The first chapters focus heavily on the histology and physiology of the different types of soft tissue in the body. The focus then turns to management issues and different approaches, and, finally, specific soft tissue disorders are addressed. The book has an excellent description of how each specialty, including pain specialists, podiatrists and therapists, can help treatment for these disorders. The chapters on specific pain areas by joint are innovative. The illustrations are of high quality and are very helpful.
Assessment:This book gives serious thought to an aspect of rheumatology which has previously been underrepresented in the literature. It is a thorough review of the disorders of the soft tissues and a comprehensive review of the available diagnostic and treatment options. The quality is excellent and the book would be useful in the clinic setting.
