Children's Literature
What is the difference between a solid, a liquid and a gas? The answer can be found simply by examining your own hair, tears and breath. Relating scientific concepts to simple facts that young children can understand is a prodigious task. Simon handles it deftly by first explaining the concept of matter. Next she individually defines solids, liquids and gases using examples familiar to children (bicycles, milk and helium balloons). Then, the idea of changing matter from one form to another is approached freezing and boiling water are everyday events common to children. Helpful additions to this book include a glossary, an index and a selection of other books and web sites that children may want to peruse. Part of the "Simply Science" series, which covers topics as diverse as the solar system and the seasons. 2001, Compass Point Books, $19.93. Ages 7 to 9. Reviewer: Chris Gill
