The early Stuart monarchs of England, King James in particular, relied on imagery of the biblical figure of King Solomon as an iconographic representation of their rule. Tate (English, Campbell U.) explores the way that the monarchs and others used different visions of the solomonic figure to comment on the virtues and failings of the Stuarts. He explores how the Stuarts and their supporters used the images of Solomon as wise and just to push the virtues of the monarchy, while critics used Solomon as a symbol of ineptitude. The works of Francis Bacon and John Milton are explored and related to the imperial ambitions of the Stuarts. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)Book Details
