Children's Literature - Sharon Oliver

In the mode of Junie B. and Ramona, Sophie is full of elementary school adventure. In her continuing quest to find the perfect name, third grader Sophie decides to be a hero, complete with a sidekick played by her best friend Kate. Sophie's desire to be a hero begins with her preventing a kindergartener from running out into the street. When a car passes by at the same time, the youngster decrees that Sophie has saved her life and is a hero. Sophie relishes the idea of being a hero and does her best to try to be heroic again. Unfortunately, Sophie's efforts tend to backfire and she finds herself covered in paint and her school lunch, among other misadventures. A quick read and appealing to reluctant readers, Sophie is missing the depth of both Junie B. and Ramona. Her family: parents, big sister, and little brother are mainly stock characters with little development or impact on the story. Sophie's adventures are reasonably entertaining for a quick read between meatier titles. Reviewer: Sharon Oliver
