Overview

Drawing on the insights of a distinguished group of international scholars from a variety of disciplines, Soundbite Culture combines theory with case analysis to describe and account for the environment within which discourse has declined, and what has replaced it and why. The authors explore the implications of their premise by investigating various media, their methods, and their social, cultural and political implications. Topics include targeted direct mail campaigns, polling, infomercials, Internet identities, radio talk shows, and film depictions.

Arguing that social discourse has been subsumed by ritualistic and stylistic performances which overwhelm reasoned thought and reflection, the editors have gathered 12 contributions from various disciplines which combine theory and case analysis to explore the decline of discourse. Ranging from a discussion of the rock group GWAR to a look at the politics of talk radio, the essays are organized into sections covering the broad themes of the affect of market economics on political discourse, resistant and populist communication such as inner-city graffiti, the role of academics, and popular media and the shaping of public behavior.
