Synopsis

(back cover)
CREATIVE PAINTING SERIES

Titles in this very practical art instruction series are designed to teach advanced students and experienced amateurs. They can be used as self-teaching guides or as textbooks in art classes.

This volume shows students many ways to develop the illusion of space and depth on a flat surface. They include mastery of the rules of perspective, as employed for instance in traditional landscapes and cityscapes, but they also focus on the purposeful absence of depth, as seen for instance in the abstractions of Mondrian and other artists of the recent past. Instruction concentrates on uses of light and shadow to enhance the illusion of dimension, and the employment of unusual points of view to emphasize vertical structures, dramatic body poses, and extraordinary views in landscapes. The authors encourage students to pursue creativity and experimentation in their search for original results. Fifteen creative approaches, each based on a historic reference, demonstrate the step-by-step development of a finished painting. A gallery at the end of this book will inspire students with additional instructive examples.
