Synopsis

Introduces Spain's folk music and dance, such as flamenco, its art and architecture, holidays and festivals, and religions.

Children's Literature

This beautifully illustrated book explores the cultural aspects of Spain in a way that makes the reader understand their beauty and significance to the population. The national pride in all these works of art, music, dance and literature, as well as important architecture and festivals, is shown using many color photographs. Children in native costume at various saints' day parades and celebrations invite the reader to share the fun. Photographs of buildings constructed during the time of the Roman Empire contrast with the Guggenheim Museum, built in 1992. Artworks from the 1500s to modern times, photographs of the Spanish, and charts and drawings make this book very accessible and interesting. Newly introduced vocabulary is highlighted to indicate inclusion in the glossary at the end of the book. A table of contents and index help the reader locate specific themes. A charming folktale from the nineteenth century concludes the text. This is a fine introduction to Spanish life and its variety of contributions to world culture throughout many centuries. Part of "The Lands, Peoples, and Cultures" series. 2002, A Bobbie Kalman Book/Crabtree Publishing, $20.60 and $7.95. Ages 8 to 12. Reviewer: Candace Deisley AGES: 8 9 10 11 12
