Overview

Anyone in need of an easily understood self-help book devoted to the ability to speak clearly, will embrace this handy guide. From the immigrant taxi driver striving to survive, to the highly educated professional who has to testify before Congress, the requests for such a book are many. Speech courses are not required in law schools, schools of medicine, or diplomacy. College students need competent vocal skills in order to get ahead in the job market. Speaking to be Understood gives the non-specialists the opportunity to reach their goal—to gain confidence in their ability to be good speakers. Speaking to be Understood is based on solid, tried and true, linguistic techniques. It starts with the importance of a competent speaking voice, how to develop a beautiful vocal instrument, and how to use and take care of the voice. It moves step-by-step through the English language, based on the International Phonetic Alphabet—the consonants, vowels, and syllables and their correct pronunciation and placement. Then it moves to every aspect of public speaking. This includes managing notes, microphones, body language, and even stage fright. The end result can be the ability to meet the challenges of communication technology and English as a second language worldwide. The accompanying CD offers advice on speech giving and explains why speaking clearly is so important.
