Audience:It is intended for undergraduates studying speech and hearing science. The authors are well known and respected in this area.
Features:The book covers the basic acoustics needed to understand speech acoustics and speech perception. It begins with an introduction and interesting history. Then a succinct chapter on acoustics provides preparation for what follows. Anatomy and physiology of speech production is followed by resultant acoustic characteristics to tie these concepts together. Anatomy and physiology of the hearing mechanism leads to the discussion of speech perception. Each chapter beings with an interesting quotation and provides a segment on potential clinical applications, thus adding to the interest of this book. Assessment:This is an important basic book in speech and hearing science that has been widely used since the first edition in 1980. This edition is divided into more chapters, making it easier to read. Several new sections have been added to update respiration information and cross language speech perception. This edition also provides clinical application sections, making it a useful update.
