Children's Literature - Amy S. Hansen

Part of the "How It Works" series, Parker looks at the insides of some of the fastest machines on Earth. From the Yamaha R1 Superbike, to the bullet train, to the Concord, Parker explains how and why they move fast, what their limitations are and what the future will hold for these vehicles. While web links are provided for more information, this book does a particularly good job of anticipating more questions, and answering them right away. For example, in the section on fast boats, Parker writes about the difference between ordinary boats and those that hydroplane. "Ordinary boats float in, not on, the water, and so have to push through it as they move...In hydroplaning the craft makes its own lifting force at speed and skims across the surface, which uses far less energy." Each vehicle is covered in a two-page spread with many pictures, long captions, and boxes of information. This book will appeal to the kids who want to know more. While there is no strong narrative, Parker's tone is does a good job of pulling you into the exciting information. Backmatter includes an illustrated glossary, and index. Reviewer: Amy S. Hansen
