From Barnes & Noble

If Splat had just one wish, it would be that he didn't have to share a pool play-date with his classmate Spike. Of course, in this new Splat The Cat picture book, that's exactly what happens; but Splish, Splash, Splat! is no disaster story. In fact, with the help of his newfound friend, Splat is able to overcome his fear of water!

Publishers Weekly

In his fifth tale, Splat the cat has a fit when he finds out that Spike is coming for an after-school play date: "He's a show-off. He calls me names. And he doesn't like me." The day goes from bad to worse when his class heads to the swimming pool (Splat hates water), but when Spike reveals that he's as scared as Splat is, the petrified frenemies—decked out in arm floaties and inner tubes—help each other overcome their fears. Bug-eyed Splat and his fellow kitties practically pounce off of Scotton's characteristically cool, pale backgrounds. Encouraging without being syrupy, Splat's latest adventure might just inspire those who hesitate poolside to take the plunge. Ages 3–7. (June)

Children's Literature - Erin Pelletier

Lovable, fun, Splat is back in a new book about facing fears and making new friends. Splat is rudely awoken from his candy fish dream by his mother who reminds him that today is the day of his play date with Spike. Spike will break all of his toys and eat all of his fish candy. To make matters worse, today is the first day of swim lessons at school. It is not going to be a good day for Splat. He is not surprised when most of his classmates rush into the water at swim lessons. He is left on the side of the pool in his fuzzy bathing suit, afraid to enter the water. But he is not alone. Spike is also afraid to enter the water and the two find they have something in common. It is up to Splat to face his fear of the water, at the same time figuring out how to help Spike. This book is cute and funny and will leave readers with a positive feeling. The illustrations are beautiful and add even more humor and meaning to the story. Readers, from toddlers to school-age children, will love this newest title in the "Splat the Cat" series. Reviewer: Erin Pelletier

PreS-Gr 1—Splat and Spike are back in a new adventure. Splat is having his worst day ever. Spike, who calls him names, eats his candy fish, and breaks his toys, is coming for a mother-arranged playdate. But first it's learn-to-swim day at Cat School. Splat hates water, "Water is horrible. It's scary and wet and makes me soggy." It turns out that he isn't alone in his feelings. When he realizes that Spike is also afraid of water, he helps him overcome his fear by luring him into the pool with a candy fish. In the end, the felines discover that water tickles and really is fun. At their playdate, Spike breaks only one toy and gives Splat the perfect gift—swim trunks. The characters' wonderful facial expressions carry the story while the integration of the text and illustrations is seamless.—Catherine Callegari, Gay-Kimball Library, Troy, NH
