Description:This book for athletic coaches covers basic physiological adaptations and offers suggestions for measurement tools and training guidelines.
Purpose:The purpose is to "present coaches with the information they need to design and carry out effective training programs." With a large number of coaches coming from nonscientific backgrounds, this book could definitely serve as a guide. The book meets its objectives, offering suggestions for designing appropriate tests, developing training programs, and discussing pros and cons of performance and health.
Audience:Although written for coaches, the book could also serve as a refresher for certified athletic trainers and strength and conditioning specialists.
Features:The book covers basic exercise physiology and training principles such as adaptation, periodization, etc. It also covers sport-specific testing principles and how to interpret the results of testing. It discusses how to develop training plans with the testing results to obtain both the athlete's and the coach's desired outcomes. One of the better features of this book is the collection of sample sport-specific plans. They not only include specific sports, but also positions within the sport.
Assessment:For the targeted audience, this book accomplishes its goals quite well. It also could be useful to sports medicine personnel in entry level positions.
