From The Critics

Reviewer: Mark R Hutchinson, MD(University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine)
Description: This sports medicine entry in the Orthopaedic Pocket Procedures series is a succinct, user friendly resource that provides the user with brief descriptions of common procedures with illustrations and appropriate coding.
Purpose: The goal and purpose of the book is to provide a practical, quick reference resource regarding a broad range of sports medicine procedures. It includes synopses of surgical approaches, pertinent anatomy, alternative treatments, surgical indications, and coding clues. These goals are worthy and valuable and Dr. Arciero and his selected contributors have done an admirable job in giving us a functional quick reference.
Audience: The authors list their target audience as orthopedic residents, orthopedists recently in practice, physical therapists, athletic trainers, operating room personnel, and other healthcare providers. Clearly, these professionals who need a basic knowledge about these procedures will reap the benefit of the book. However, I have been in practice 10 years and love the book. It is a concise access to coding and a quick reference to alternatives. Dr. Arciero is highly respected by his colleagues and very knowledgeable.
Features: The handbook is a compendium of procedures excellently organized for quick reference. You can find the procedures alphabetically, by anatomic region, or by CPT code. Clearly, this unique approach to organization optimizes its use as a reference. The line drawings and pictures are concise and a basic need to know of anatomy. My only suggestion would be that, for each section and procedure, the authors include key structures at risk.
Assessment: The book is unique in that most books offer an in-depth analysis of each procedure or cover only a specific joint. This reference has succeeded in serving as a quick reference for most procedures performed by the sports medicine orthopedist. I am glad I have my copy and will buy more to put in the OR for my staff and residents and in my training rooms for my athletic trainers.
