Children's Literature -
Basic information about St. Patrick and the holiday that bears his name is presented in simple sentences accompanied by colorful photographs. A six-page summary of Patrick's life and sainthood describes his association with and importance to Ireland. When many Irish people immigrated to North America and Australia, they brought their traditions for celebrating St. Patrick's Day with them. Some of these include eating foods, such as Irish stew, corned beef with cabbage, and Irish soda bread; listening and dancing to Irish music made with fiddles, bagpipes, and harps; and wearing green clothing. Many people participate in and watch parades on March 17 each year. Some of the history and legends of shamrocks and leprechauns contribute to the folklore surrounding the holiday. A "Did you know?" section on each double-page spread includes a fact apparently intended to supplement the text. This book includes a glossary and an index. This addition to the "Celebrations in My World" series is a good introduction to this holiday for young children. Reviewer: Phyllis Kennemer, Ph.D.Book Details
