Overview
This popular biography series was designed for the young reader. Lots of photographs add to the appeal of these clearly written, factual stories featuring well-known people, along with an easy-to-read typeface and helpful time line. Each book includes an index.A brief biography of the British theoretical physicist who is well-known for his advances in the study of cosmology, accomplished despite being physically limited by amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) or Lou Gehrig's disease.

Gr 3-5The format of this volume is appropriate for young readers (large print; clean, uncluttered pages; and numerous captioned, full-color photographs), but the writing style is less than inviting and the content is disappointing. Short, choppy sentences; a belabored clarification of terms in the text; and a superficial consideration of this important scientist's contributions to the field of cosmology will disappoint students looking for report material. A chronology (in very small print) appears on the last page. There is no documentation of quotations, bibliography, or list for further reading. There are no photos of Hawking prior to his paralysis, and most of the captions simply repeat statements that appear in the text; others are only loosely related to the illustration or are misleading.Carolyn Angus, The Claremont Graduate School, CABook Details
