Reviewer: Linda Jacobs-Condit, AuD, CCC-A(George Washington University)Description: This business practice management book covers all of the topics related to establishing, maintaining, and managing a viable audiology private practice.
Purpose: According to the authors, the purpose is to provide information on all of the elements critical to managing an audiology private practice, both for currently practicing audiologists and the new generation just entering the field.
Audience: Dr. Glaser has been an audiology practitioner for more than 25 years and has served as president of AAA and the Ohio Academy of Audiology, and Chair of the Ohio (licensing) Board of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology. Dr. Traynor has been an independent practice manager for more than 35 years. He has taught at several universities and has been an audiology consultant for the hearing industry.
Features: The book includes information on pricing products and services, tracking the practice with business ratios, how to garner and keep referrals, insurance coding and reimbursement, patient management, personnel management, fiscal management, why to incorporate the practice, how to reduce liability, and how to run a nonprofit center. Also included are chapters on compensation, the importance of developing and maintaining a policy/procedures manual, and marketing. The references are appropriate and current (from the last 10 years, with many from the past 2 years). This is a good book for any audiologist, whether self-employed in a private practice or employed in an agency, hospital, or university setting.
Assessment: This is a good companion to the book by Hosford-Dunn (Audiology: Practice Management, 2nd edition (Thieme Medical Publishers, 2008)). One unique chapter in this book covers practice management considerations in a university audiology center. University-based clinics (whether solely for audiology, or combined speech-language-audiology) are business entities just as private practices are.
