Reference & Research Book News

For high school music teachers, this guide provides 58 strategies for teaching general music classes, following the K-12 National Music Education Standards and published in partnership with the MENC: The National Association for Music Education. The authors do not suggest course offerings or curriculum content but provide examples of activities to develop skills within the framework that learning about music is most effective in active ways and through aural experience. Strategies include step-by-step instructions outlining objectives, materials, prior knowledge and experience needed, procedures, indicators of success, and follow-up for expanding learning. Strategies are organized around the nine National Music Education Standards relating to singing, performing on instruments, improvising, composing and arranging music, reading and notion, listening and analysis, evaluating music and performances, understanding relationship between the arts and other disciplines, and music in relation to history and culture.
