Overview

A collection of poems about city places and experiences. "Street Talk succeeds. It does what poetry does, and as a child of the world of graffiti, asphalt and breakdance wanders the pages, well might she say +yes, yes, that's just what I feel.' " -- New York Times Book Review

Gr 3-5 A child's perspective of the city, its people, places, and activities provide the focus for these 29 original poems. Highlights of the zoo, the museum, the park, and memorable people such as the red-dress girl, Grandma, and the street people are found in poems whose titles reflect their contents. Black-and-white block prints appear on alternate page spreads and show a blend of intergenerational and multicultural city residents. The illustrations serve a decorative purpose and portray youthful vitality manifested in a variety of experiences. Lively content notwithstanding, they are likely to have minimal appeal to the intended audience. Unfortunately, a general lackluster tone pervades this book. The style of language strongly suggests that the poems are more appropriately about children than for those who fall within the intended audience age range.
