This excellent introductory text reviews the principles of biomechanics, kinesiology, and functional anatomy as they relate to the movement of the human body. The stated purpose is to develop the student's understanding of the relationship between the structure and function of the musculoskeletal system. This objective is met through a well structured and clearly written text. The author has published over 70 journal articles and four books in this area. He is also an advisory board member for two prestigious physical education journals. He has written this text primarily for undergraduate students in kinesiology, exercise science, sports science, and physical education. Students in physical therapy, occupational therapy, and podiatry will also find it useful. It is my opinion that the author has written an excellent introductory text. It is legibly written with extensive use of illustrations, conceptual models, and review questions to provide clarity. This text would be an excellent addition to the library of any health professional interested in exercise science or injury prevention. It is a nice adjunct to Enoka's Neuromechanical Basis of Kinesiology, 2nd Edition (Human Kinetics, Inc., 1994) and Norkin's Joint Structure and Function: A Comprehensive Analysis (FA Davis, 1992).

About the Author, James Watkins

James Watkins, PhD, is a professor of biomechanics in the School of Human Sciences and director of the Sport and Exercise Science Research Centre at the Swansea University in Wales. Watkins spent over 20 years in Glasgow, Scotland, as a lecturer and researcher, and he served as the head of the department of physical education, sport and outdoor education at Jordanhill College and later at the University of Strathclyde, both in Glasgow.

Watkins' main teaching and research specializations are musculoskeletal anatomy and the biomechanics of sport and exercise. He has authored over 80 publications, including three well-known textbooks (An Introduction to the Mechanics of Human Movement, 1983; this text, Structure and Function of the Musculoskeletal System; and An Introduction to Biomechanics of Sport and Exercise, 2007).

Watkins is a fellow of the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES), a fellow of the Physical Education Association of the United Kingdom (PEAUK), and an honorary member of the Association for Physical Education (afPE). He is an advisory board member of the Journal of Sports Sciences and a former chair of the Biomechanics Section of BASES.

In 1975 Watkins received his PhD in biomechanics from the University of Leeds in England. He resides in Swansea, where he enjoys walking, playing golf, and reading about the history of science.

Description: This is an excellent book on the relationship between the structure and the function of the musculoskeletal system for undergraduate students in kinesiology and the movement sciences.
Purpose: "In anatomy, structure and function always follow each other, and it is important to have a book for movement science students that addresses both of these concepts. This book does an excellent job of communicating these relationships across the musculoskeletal system. "
Audience: "Undergraduate students are the audience and the book is appropriately organized and written for this population. Dr. Watkins is an accomplished author who has written or contributed to several books in this area. "
Features: Covering the musculoskeletal system from both an anatomical perspective and a functional perspective, this book first addresses basic anatomy in a concise manner before moving on to the applied topics of how movement affects the two systems. A nice touch is the in-text citations, which allow readers to easily seek further information. In addition, the illustrations and figures are excellent with plenty of labels and annotations to make them more meaningful to readers.
Assessment: This is an excellent addition to any undergraduate course in the movement sciences. Students in this discipline require foundational knowledge about anatomy, but often lack the insight into how movement applies to the musculoskeletal system. This book does a fine job addressing this.
