Beginning with the first National Black Political Convention, held in Gary, Indiana, in 1972, the author moves to a discussion and description of the resistance raised by Boston's white citizens to desegregation of the public schools. Affirmative action; the election of black public officials, particularly mayors of major cities and Jesse Jackson's two bids for the American presidency; and the rise of the Congressional Black Caucus are all discussed. The book also examines the cultural influences of black Americans on American popular culture, with a chapter that looks at the presence of African-American characters in television shows and the emergence of rap as a major musical force.
