Overview

A low rumble gets louder and louder. The walls start to shake. Objects fall to the floor. An earthquake has hit! Earthquake scientists rush to scenes like this to better understand the causes of earthquakes and predict when they will hit. Put science skills to work to help a city prepare for the next big quake.

Synopsis

These activity-based books extend the concept of our best-selling Mathworks! Series by exploring how science is put to use in exciting, real-world situations that will fascinate readers. They use charts, tables, and diagrams to solve the same type of science problems that experts face every day. The colorful, high-interest approach motivates students to think about science in new and exciting ways.

Children's Literature - Mary Bowman-Kruhm

Like the other books in the "Scienceworks!" series, this book mimics web pages with two-page spreads characterized by four succinctly worded text boxes. These text boxes are: Introduction to the topic of the two pages, Factfile with basic information, Workstation with additional information, including diagrams, charts and similar visuals, and Challenge Questions. Each of the double-page spreads is a chapter that leads the reader from prediction of an earthquake to destruction from its force to finding the epicenter to assessing damage after a quake. Use of the second person you encourages a reader to envision being a seismologist. Although Challenge questions require varying levels of comprehension, students would need to use higher order thinking skills to respond to many of them and the questions asked are suitable for use of cooperative learning techniques like Think-Pair-Share. Back matter includes Tips and Answers and Glossary. The series supports the National Science Education Standards, K-4. Photographs are dramatic and well-chosen, explanatory drawings and maps are clear, and fonts are bold sans serif, but for some students the busyness of the pages and lack of white space may hinder focus. Reviewer: Mary Bowman-Kruhm, Ph.D.
