Children's Literature
In this appealing nonfiction book, children are introduced to the celebrations and legends associated throughout history with the summer solstice. A summer solstice folktale from Hawaii, solstice activities, recipes and a bibliography of additional readings are included. The earth tone illustrations are interesting and authentically represent the cultures introduced in the text. The book is full of facts that are presented in such a way as to not overpower the reader, whether child or adult. Although the book is short and is in picture book format, the information is appropriate for even middle grade children. 2001, Millbrook Press, $21.90 and $14.95. Ages 8 to 12. Reviewer: Jenny B. (J. B.) PettySchool Library Journal
Gr 3-6-A companion volume to the author's The Winter Solstice (Millbrook, 1994), this title is chockablock with beliefs, customs, and celebrations of the moment when the sun is highest in the sky-the midsummer mark of the Earth's fruitful season. Ancient ceremonies and contemporary festivals around the globe are included, as are a collection of activities (creating a sidewalk sundial, for example), an abbreviated retelling of a Polynesian sun myth, and a couple of recipes. Scientific sun facts are sprinkled throughout the readable text, though sadly missing is a diagram showing the orbital positions of Earth at the solstices. An interesting conglomeration of folkloric traditions, science, and myth, generously strewn with colorful, lively illustrations.-Patricia Manning, formerly at Eastchester Public Library, NY Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.Book Details
