Synopsis

Emma McGraw just can't sit back and watch someone being teased—especially one of her friends. So when class bully Jared Matthews chooses EllRay Jakes as his next target, Emma can't hold back. But unfortunately for Emma, her good deed is not appreciated. Instead of helping EllRay, Emma just embarrassed him. What boy wants to be “saved” by a girl?! Now everyone is calling her Super Emma, and Jared has set his sights on her. Who will rescue Emma now that Jared is tossing around threats? Her superhero may be someone she would never have thought of.

Children's Literature

Emma was not trying to be brave when she defended EllRay. In fact, she did not give much thought to her actions at all. A boy named Jared Matthews was picking on poor EllRay and Emma simply could not just stand by and watch it. The problem is, Emma is now the bully's new target and the bully is EllRay! EllRay is embarrassed that a girl defended him. He and all of the other kids in class are teasing Emma. She is being called "Super Emma" and EllRay is threatening to "trash" her. Unknowingly, Emma really is "super." She handles this problem with the same degree of bravery that she used when originally confronting EllRay. All children are advised to confide in a grown-up when they need help and this story supports that resolution. This is an honest portrayal of everyday life for many elementary school children and it is told with a sense of humor that will have the reader rooting for Emma. With the recent emphasis given to the bullying problem in numerous schools across the country, this book offers a simple and sensible solution.
