A renowned medieval scholar, Swinburne didn't follow the nostalgic views of Scott and other Victorian medievalists. Harrison feels Swinburne's fidelity to medieval character and style has kept scholars from recognizing the complexities and subtleties of his works. This study attempts to fill that void in Victorian medievalism. From Rosamond to Balen (with two chapters on Tristram ), every work of medieval nature is analyzed for its own merit and as a step in Swinburne's maturity as a writer and philosopher. Harrison presents his views with a passion and defensiveness of a man justifying his dedication to an idea foreign to his peers. This dedication, however, is founded in a thorough and valid study of the works. Martin J. Hudacs, Towanda H.S., Pa.Book Details
