Overview

Countering claims that the canon of Machine Age art is primarily European, Dinerstein presents a well-referenced study of "grooveology" which credits the African American contribution to the modernity represented in jazz and big band rhythms as well as by architecture, movies, assembly lines, and trains. E.g., new technology generated worksongs sung by African American railroad workers. The book is based on postdoctoral research in humanities done while the author was at Cornell University; he'll be joining the English faculty at Tulane U.
