Switzerland, one of a series of books entitled "Festivals of the World," is well-organized into eight chapters. The first chapter gives basic information about where Switzerland is in the world, including a map. The second chapter identifies the festivals by name and by season. Phrases head paragraphs which describe the action, the costumes, the origin, and the tradition behind the celebrations. Photographs, often against white space, invite the reader into the fun. Instructions for projects to make and food to cook are easy to follow. A glossary, an index, and suggestions for further reading help enrich this learning experience. By the end of this book the reader knows that parades featuring costumes and especially fantastic hats worn by all ages of celebrants make the year go round in this charming and unique country. 1999, Garth Stevens Publishing, Ages 8 to 12, $21.27. Gr 3-5-Each of these books includes full-color photographs, a good map, pronunciations of foreign or special words, two crafts, and a recipe. They have an annotated list of festivals arranged by season and a short description of five festivals. Many of the pictures seem posed, and the general presentations have a chamber of commerce look and tone about them. The "Cultures of the World" series (Marshall Cavendish) includes festivals as well as many other subjects. Buy "Festivals of the World" only if you need sound bites on the subject.-Carolyn Jenks, First Parish Unitarian Church, Portland, ME Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information.
