Synopsis

This glorious, large–format volume is the first comprehensive monograph on the work of popular abstract artist Sylvia Edwards. Featuring more than a hundred color images, it also includes four lithographs printed on fine paper, one of which is signed by the artist in a limited edition of 500 prints.

Sylvia Edwards has achieved enormous commercial success, and her work is known, and respected, throughout the world. She has had more than 30 solo exhibitions in America, Europe, and the Far and Middle East, as well as nearly 50 group exhibitions. Her paintings have also been reproduced as posters, UNICEF greetings cards, and limited–edition silk screens, all of which are best–sellers in their respective media. This superbly illustrated volume is the first comprehensive survey of her work. Each book includes four lithographs, including one signed by the artist in a limited edition of 500 prints. Art critic Mel Gooding has contributed an illuminating essay on Edwards’ artistic achievement, while David Elliott collaborated with Edwards on the accompanying biographical profile. A stunning celebration of a fascinating and flourishing contemporary painter.

Library Journal

American-born international artist Edwards (b. 1937) is a prolific, highly skilled, primarily large-scale watercolorist and painter in acrylics. Her originals are precious to serious collectors, while the general public acquires popular reproductions of her joyful images "of the color of the world." (She donates lucrative rights of some paintings to UNICEF and Greenpeace.) Edwards's abstract expanding shapes are suffused with light and clear color. More characteristic are semi-abstract playful mixtures of glowing jewels of landscapes, figures, animals, tapestries, and flowers. Edwards is a pattern painter, a follower of Milton Avery, or, as her primary critic and historian Gooding poetically convinces us, a maker of whimsical "fantasias" along the lines of Matisse, Klee, and folk art. The volume has 155 color plates, including a signed lithograph and three other originals. The sole book on the artist, with biographical and exhibition data, this is very beautiful and suitable for a browsing collection, though the price is daunting. Recommended.-Mary Hamel Bruce, formerly with Cutler Memorial Lib., Plainfield, VT Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
