Synopsis
The papers appearing in this text were originally presented at the 2001 International Systemic Functional Congress held in Ottawa, Canada, examining a broad range of current social changes. Fifteen contributions are organized into a theoretical section and two applied sections addressing national identity and institutional identity. A sampling of topics: analysis discursive variation; systemic functional linguistics, critical discourse analysis, and the inculcation of evaluative-meaning systems; the representation of social actors in the Globe and Mail during the breakup of the former Yugoslavia; authority and its role in the pedagogic relationship of schooling; and representations of rape in the discourse of legal decisions.
