Rihoko Ueno - Children's Literature
All the books in the "My Five Senses" series, including Taste, are attractive and full of visually arresting images. The large-print and colorful photographs make the text very reader friendly. Hidalgo consistently conveys complex ideas in a simple way. Information is presented in lists. For the most part, the text sticks to basic facts when explaining how things such as the taste buds or saliva work, so this book is best considered as an introduction to the topic. Even so, at the bottom of most pages there are various trivia about the ways that animals and humans experience so even older readers may learn something new. The book includes the obligatory sections on vocabulary and further reading but there is also an activity page about how salt and sugar alter the taste of juices that may be a fun addition for younger readers. 2004, Smart Apple Media, Ages 4 to 6.
