Children's Literature
As indicated in the preface, this book as well as others in the "People in my Community" series, is intended to be read within an instructional-guided reading group. This book lends itself very nicely to such an arrangement. The photographs are colorful and present familiar images and experiences to young readers. The font of the textβfound only on the left pageβis just right, with manageable vocabulary. A divergent activity would be to display the photographs and engage readers in attempting to explain what could be happening in each scenario. It is encouraging to see male teachers, involved teachers and multicultural classes included in this concise work. Equally encouraging is the very last statement: "It's fun to share what you know" alongside a photograph of a young lady reading to her Cabbage Patch doll, proving anyone can practice teaching skills. Potential teachers may be culled from reading this due to the positive presentation of the profession in this book. The book is just the right size for primary school hands, not too cumbersome, but not too infantile for them, either. 2003, Weekly Reader Early Learning Library, Ages 4 to 8.β Elizabeth Young
