Children's Literature

Flint Lockwood is a boy who knows he was born to "create something awesome." Most of his inventions do not work out, but he keeps trying. The people in his town only eat sardines, so he decides to invent a food machine even though Flint's dad wants him to work at the bait and tackle shop. Flint's machine works and everyone has food and thinks that Flint is a hero. His dad is still skeptical and wants Flint to turn off the machine. Then disaster strikes as the food becomes bigger and out of control. After a series of hits and misses, Flint and his dad manage to shut off the machine. Flint is happy that his dad is so proud of him. The illustrations are colorful and amusing. Young children should enjoy all the action and the funny situations. This text is part of the "Ready?to?Read" and the "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" series on Level Two, which is for children who are reading independently. Reviewer: Vicki Foote
