Synopsis

Underground construction is becoming increasingly important for the quality of life of citizens, as it is a way to solve problems with increasing traffic congestion and pollution. Currently there are several tunnel projects planned for the next decade that are estimated to cost 22 Billion Euros.

The articles in this book present the results of the integrated European project TUNCONSTRUCT (Technology Innovation in Underground Construction). With 41 partners (mainly from industry) and a budget of 24 Million Euros this 4 year project is the largest on this subject worldwide. The aim of this project was to decrease the construction costs, risks and times considerably by an innovation of construction technology and attain a breakthrough in this area.
