A great reference resource, this clearly written, comprehensive legal guide for teens covers everything from school dress codes to sexual harassment to signing contracts. It even has a chapter on eating disorders (the only non-legal chapter) that suggests where teens can go for help. Each chapter covers a different topic, including an explanation of the issue, the rights of the teen, and often actual cases showing how different courts have ruled. Advice is given about when teens should speak and when they should call in a lawyer. Excellent Web sites and book suggestions are listed in the first appendix. Appendix B summarizes each state's age requirements and laws concerning abortion, marriage, driver's licenses, and other vital teen concerns. Barring a few typos, this book fulfills its mission perfectly. The low price and the overall usefulness of this guide make it a must for public libraries. School libraries may want it on hand for the large section on school law. Libraries whose teens have no legal concerns might still find the book useful for the Web site suggestions, help hotline numbers, and the suggestions of major cases that would be helpful for research reports. The second appendix alone makes a great ready-reference tool with the age of majority and labor laws for each state as well as the title of each particular state's set of law/code books. The legal research chapter gives teens a glimpse at how to get started in legal research. VOYA CODES: 4Q 2P J S (Better than most, marred only by occasional lapses; For the YA with a special interest in the subject; Junior High, defined as grades 7 to 9; Senior High, defined as grades 10 to 12). 2005, Sphinx Publishing/Sourcebooks,323p.; Glossary. Index. Further Reading. Appendix., Trade pb. Ages 12 to 18.
