Coming to us from the UK is this "Know Your Sports" series for serious beginning athletes. Unlike many such series, this book includes step-by-step instructions of specific moves and techniques, with accompanying photos (most modeled by proficient teen players in England). The book's first twelve two-page spreads introduce readers to the sport, show a diagram of a court, and provide tips on necessary clothing and equipment. Later pages dissect the forehand and backhand drives, volleys, and smart moves on the court. Two sections are devoted to the vital skills of serving and receiving, while two more cover advanced shots and the intricacies of playing doubles. Pages are spacious and neatly designed, while the text is succinct. Players and spectators alike will appreciate a sprinkling of color photos and information about tennis stars like Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and sisters Serena and Venus Williams. Especially interesting are the sidebars and a color shot of Martina Navratilova, billed as the "greatest female player of all time." A final spread lists statistics on winners and titles as well as a glossary of tennis terms and some appropriate websites. This series could be helpful for individual beginning players or used as a supplement in a school sports program. Reviewer: Barbara L. Talcroft
