Overview

Terrel is always in charge, whether she's making lists for grocery shopping (her favorite hobby, AFTER ballet), keeping her brothers in line, or organizing father-daughter time in with her dad. Lately, though, her dad's been acting a little strange—wearing new clothes and way too much aftershave. Things get even weirder when he surprises Terrel with his new girlfriend during a night out at the ballet - a night that was supposed to be father-daughter time. What's more, his "date" brought her niece along. A niece who turns out to be Terrel's ballerina nemesis, Tiara Girl! With some Sugar Plum help, Terrel takes charge of breaking up her father's new relationship.

Children's Literature - Carly Reagan

Since her mother died, almost-9-year-old Terrel has kept her dad and brothers organized. When Terrel's dad begins dating the aunt of Terrel's arch enemy in dance class, Tiara Girl, Terrel begins to use her organizational skills to formulate a plan to break them up immediately. What she learns along the way is an important lesson: how to see things from the point of view of others. Every character, small or not, adult or child, is well developed and real, thoughts and emotions are well expressed, and situations are realistic and easy to relate to. In this fourth book of the "Sugar Plum Ballerina" series, Terrel's interest in ballet plays a larger role in developing who she is as a person than in the storyline itself, though it would still be a certain draw for the reader who loves dance. Terrel's voice is strong and likeable, and the message that comes across in the end, of how different a situation can seem from another point of view, is positive and mature, and puts faith in young readers to be able to do the same.
