Gr 5-9-These overviews provide brief explanations of major international problems. Each one looks at the history, current phenomena, policy arguments, government action, and possible effects on the readers. Unfortunately, the breadth of coverage comes at the cost of depth and coherence, particularly in Terrorism; the text jumps from topic to topic providing two or three sentences on each of many complex issues. However, the authors present a variety of arguments, including some that criticize the U.S. government and rich countries in general. Students are advised to consult the resources (Internet and print) listed in the further-information section of each volume. The writing styles are clear and lively, and the full-color photographs are well keyed to the texts. Terrorism compares favorably with Tricia Andryszewski's Terrorism in America (Millbrook, 2002) as it has a more international focus. Chemical and Biological Warfare covers more ground than Gregory Payan's Chemical and Biological Weapons (Children's, 2000). Refugees is much drier and more fact-oriented than Cath Senker's Why Are People Refugees? (Raintree, 2004).
