Overview
This important new resource offers both clinicians and researchers a single-volume resource that covers not only advances in clinical interventions but also the latest advances in theoretical knowledge. Following a comprehensive overview of anxiety disorders, the book provides detailed coverage of seven specific DSM-IV-TR diagnoses: generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), mixed anxiety-depression, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, specific phobias, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Each section covers the latest thinking on symptomatology and pathogenesis, then provides evidence-based clinical recommendations for pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy.
This new edition features new chapters on anxious traits and temperaments, the neuropsychology of anxiety disorders, and anxiety and insomnia. Other chapters have been entirely rewritten by new authors to provide fresh insight into such topics as integrated treatment of anxiety disorders; pharmacotherapy for GAD, OCD, and panic disorder; psychotherapy for OCD and PTSD; anxiety disorders in the elderly; anxiety accompanying substance abuse; and the economic and social costs of anxiety. All chapters have been expanded and fully updated with new research findings, and each now includes a concise summary of key clinical points to help readers put those findings into practice.

Reviewer:William Miles, MD(Rush University Medical Center)
Description:This handsome, hardcover book thoroughly reviews the phenomenology, etiology, pathophysiology, and treatment of the anxiety disorders.
Purpose:The purpose is to present to the reader a collection of contributions at the cutting edge of anxiety disorder research. Since the anxiety disorders are among the most prevalent of all psychiatric syndromes, these are certainly worthy objectives.
Audience:The book is quite detailed, and therefore is written for psychiatric and medical clinicians, researchers, and educators. It is probably too advanced for medical students, but senior psychiatric residents might find it a good resource.
Features:The book is divided into 10 parts. The first part provides an overview of the anxiety disorders, including history, neurology, evolutionary concepts, and psychodynamic explanations. The remaining parts thoroughly review the different anxiety disorders as found in DSM-IV, devoting separate chapters to topics such as phenomenology, pathophysiology, and treatment. The last part of the book is devoted to the economic and cultural impact of anxiety disorders. Each chapter is thoroughly referenced, and an index is found at the end of the book. There are no illustrations, but numerous tables and figures are scattered throughout.
Assessment:This strikingly detailed book is a tremendous contribution to the field of psychiatry. It provides a thorough review of some of the most economic burdensome diseases in medicine. Covering the latest research in the pathophysiology and neurobiology of anxiety disorders, and thelatest advances in pharmacotherapy, this book would be an invaluable resource and reference guide for any clinician who wishes to better understand these diseases.

Features: "The 41 chapters are grouped into 10 parts. Part I lays the groundwork with important fundamental issues such as the history of anxiety disorders, neural circuits, temperament, the neuropsychology of anxiety, cognitive-behavioral concepts, psychodynamic concepts, evolutionary concepts, and combined treatment. Part II is a summary of the literature on the phenomenology, pathogenesis, pharmacotherapy, and psychotherapy of generalized anxiety disorder. In part III, subsyndromal mixed anxiety-depressive states are reviewed. Obsessive-compulsive disorder is thoroughly reviewed in Part IV with superb chapters on phenomenology, pathophysiology, pharmacotherapy, and psychological treatments, and an interesting chapter on obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders. Parts V, VI, VII, and VIII focus on panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, specific phobia, and post-traumatic stress disorder respectively.
