Children's Literature - Della A. Yannuzzi

Author Feinstein has written a sixty-four page picture book about the 70s, from Watergate to Disco. It is an interesting blend of lifestyles, fashion and fads, entertainment, sports, politics, science and medicine, and environmental issues. It is a look back in time for young readers. One of the most important events happening in the late sixties and seventies was the Vietnam War and the counter hippie culture. It was also a time to voice Native American Issues, women's struggles for equal rights, and the need to end discrimination. In sports, Billie Jean King defeated the male tennis champion Bobby Riggs in the "Battle of the Sexes." An African American named Arthur Ashe won the Wimbledon trophy after defeating Jimmy Connors on July 5, 1975. That year also saw the end of the Vietnam War. In 1974, President Nixon resigned from the presidency after the Watergate cover up, and an environmental disaster in an area called Love Canal in Niagara Falls, New York, prompted more protection for the environment. The 1970s were remarkable years, and this book offers information to readers who may be curious about the years their parents may have experienced. Color and black-and-white photographs illustrate the text. Back matter includes a time line, further reading, and Internet addresses.
