Based on seven years of research with 6,400 first time juvenile offenders, this book focuses on long-term solutions to the problem of repeat crimes, offering a way to pick out the 8 percent of kids who are the perpetrators of over half of the repeat juvenile crimes. Kurz, Director of Program Support and Research for the Probation Department, and Schumacher, Chief Probation Officer, both in Orange County (CA), describe the characteristics of kids who repeatedly get into trouble and offer cost-effective ways to correct the problem, particularly by identifying the most likely career criminals and providing them with skill-building and family-oriented services to mitigate the factors that link kids to repeat crime.
