This is a solid reference work on the business and people of the airline industry. The articles are clear and vary in length, covering the early mail service, labor organizations, air commerce regulations, and specific airlines from giants like United and Delta to tiny and defunct Northeast and North Central. Many have accompanying photographs. The articles, selected by scholars and historians, cover the business side of manufacturing and transportation, and include biographies of the people who built the airlines--most notably, Frank Borman, Thomas Braniff, Edward J. Daly, Howard Hughes, and Eddie Rickenbacker. This is excellent as a stand-alone volume; as part of the ongoing ``Encyclopedia of American Business History and Biography,'' it will make a significant contribution to business literature.
