Wilson, an editor at Christianity Today and editor of "The Best Christian Writing" series, of which this is the fifth installment, states in his preface that Christian writing is informed by a view of the universe as created by God, of human beings as made in the divine image but also primordially ruined, yet saved by a crucifixion that healed that estrangement. In his introduction, Mark Noll (Christian thought, Wheaton Coll.) then goes on to discuss various models of Christian writing, referencing existing works (i.e., not in this anthology) on Augustine, Jonathan Edwards, and Darwin. The one patristic and 11 contemporary selections compiled here-by Christian writers such as Andy Crouch, Amy Laura Hall, Paul Marshall, Virginia Stem Owens, and Gregory Wolfe-have real substance, call for reflection on the part of the reader, and vary widely in subject matter, from St. Augustine on the Nativity to Islamic Counter-Reformation.
