Overview

This book traces the rise, development, and decline of the Bluestocking circle between 1740 and 1800, through a close analysis of the lives and works of the women who made up the group. Drawing on previously unpublished material, Myers offers new and important details on the relationships, social lives, and writings of the Circle. Significantly adding to the knowledge of eighteenth-century women writers, Myers addresses the controversy surrounding the nature of the women's relationships within the group and argues that the Circle was not comprised of latent lesbians, but rather of a group of friends, men as well as women, who were involved intellectually rather than romantically.
