Synopsis

Lucas was bored. Although there was plenty to do on his farm, no one paid attention to him--not even the cows. He was tired of his ordinary life. "I wish I could be famous like people on television. That would stop me from being bored," he said. Then, purely by chance, Lucas yawns and accidentally swallows a rainbow that just happened to be above his head. Now, every time he speaks, vibrant bubbles float from his mouth. Lucas is instantly famous and makes hundreds of television appearances. Word of his fame spreads everywhere—even to a couple of thieves who think there must be a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow Lucas swallowed! Trevor Romain brings his trademark wit and illustrations to this colorful tale that shows leading an ordinary life isn't so bad after all.

Children's Literature

Lucas is bored with his life on the farm, even though there is plenty to do, such as "milking the cows, feeding the African fainting goats, and watering the miniature pigs." But one day, he accidentally swallows a rainbow, and the resulting fame and zany adventures make him appreciate his old life and friends more. Cartoon-like watercolors match the whimsical feeling of this humorous picture book. 2000, Boyd's Mill, $15.95. Ages 5 to 10. Reviewer: Gisela Jernigan
