Synopsis

An inspiring picture book about John, Robert, and Edward Kennedy, by acclaimed author Kathy Krull and New York Times bestselling artist Amy Bates.

Children's Literature

A glimpse into the lives of the Kennedy brothers is the feature of this book. From a family of nine children, there were four brothers: Joe, John, Robert, and Edward. Although the title does not include the oldest brother, there is some information about Joe in the first section of the story. The other sections feature John, Robert, and Edward; however, the story brings together their work in politics. Read about some of the challenges, successes, and tragedies they faced during their lives as children and later as adults and politicians. The watercolor, gouache, and pencil illustrations catch different poignant moments during the course of the brothers' lives. The story begins and ends with memorable quotes from John, Robert, and Edward Kennedy. At the back of the book, readers will find some further information about the Kennedy brothers. There is a time line of events in their lives. Students conducting research may need to access additional resources for information; the list of additional book titles to explore may contribute to further understanding the lives and legacies of the Kennedy family. Gr 2–4β€”Throughout this tribute, emphasis is placed on the dedication to the principles of hope, compassion, and loyalty shared by the brothers, with selected events from each of their lives presented to illustrate how they acted on those principles. The recurring imagery appears to be the sea, a love shared by the three. While not enough information on any one man is provided for report writers, the book serves as a good introduction to this important American political dynasty. Bates's watercolor, gouache, and pencil illustrations are a gentle accompaniment to this often-tragic tale. The opening pages feature amusing scenes of the nine siblings' interactions and activities and become more somber as the brothers grow up. An annotated time line is included.β€”Grace Oliff, Ann Blanche Smith School, Hillsdale, NJ
