Synopsis

The Burlington Magazine has maintained a high, international reputation for publishing authoritative writing on all aspects of art history since its foundation in 1903 by a group of distinguished scholars headed by Roger Fry, Bernard Berenson, and Herbert Horne. Now, in celebration of its centenary, an eminent art historian has compiled this selection of some of the most significant articles, reviews, editorials, and obituaries to appear in it during the twentieth century. The resulting anthology has its surprises and is both entertaining and informative.

Author Biography: Sir Michael Levey, formerly Director of the National Gallery, London, is the author of a number of catalogues and books, including Painting and Sculpture in France 1700 1789 (Yale University Press, 1993). Caroline Elam, Andrew W. Mellon Professor, Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts, National Gallery of Art, Washington, was editor of The Burlington Magazine 1987 2002.

Library Journal

In today's world of art magazines, the Burlington Magazine remains something of an anomaly. Generally avoiding the trendy and trivial aspects of the art glitterati, the magazine maintains a high scholarly content. At the same time, it appears on a monthly schedule, with glossy photography not usually seen in the scholarly journals. Founded in 1903 by an illustrious group that included Roger Fry and Bernard Berenson, Burlington published, and continues to publish, some of the most important thinkers in art history. This anthology collects articles, reviews, editorials, and obituaries that have appeared in Burlington's pages. Included are Erwin Panofsky on Jan van Eyck, Herbert Read on connoisseurship, E.H. Gombrich on Poussin, Kenneth Clark on Piero della Francesca, Roland Penrose on Picasso, and many more. With highlights from nearly 100 years of art historical writing packed into one volume, edited by Levey (director, National Gallery, London), the book will give the casual reader a quick lesson in the changes that have occurred in critical thinking during this time. Recommended for larger collections with a focus on art history.-Martin R. Kalfatovic, Smithsonian Inst. Libs., Washington, DC Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
