Overview
Thirteen year old Joseph Francis Xavier Armagh catches his first glimpse of America from the dim porthole of the stinking and rat infested steerage deck of The Irish Queen about to dock on American soil. Left homeless when his mother dies before landing, Joseph must make a home for himself and his younger brother and infant sister in a new and unfamiliar country. His efforts are heroic, yet he must eventually leave his siblings in an orphanage to pursue employment elsewhere in order to save them all. Driven by vengeance for a world that brutalized and rejected him, Joseph succeeds in amassing a fortune and becomes a powerful and feared man. However he experiences little joy in living and, burdened by a dying man's curse, must endure interminable grief as death claims almost everyone he loves.Captains and the Kings may be relished for the sheer pleasure of immersing oneself in an epic tale of America's roistering past, but be prepared for the author's biting view of mankind. Although entertained by the ride, readers may arrive at their destination exhausted and hollow-eyed.Book Details
