Overview
One of the best-known and largest of the North American tribes, the Cherokee Indians originally resided in the southern Appalachians in an area that now encompasses the states of North and South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, and Tennessee. Known as the Ani'-Yun'wiya or "Principal People," the Cherokees have endured much throughout their history, including forced removal from their ancestral home and a civil war. Today, the Cherokees are split into three groups, with reservations in two states: the Cherokee Nation and United Keetoowah Band in Oklahoma and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians in North Carolina.Book Details
